STAR GAS PARTNERS ACQUIRES LEADING SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY PROPANE DISTRIBUTOR, MODERN GAS STAMFORD, CT (March 14, 2002) -- Star Gas Partners, L.P. (the "Partnership") (NYSE: SGU, SGH), a diversified energy distributor and services provider, specializing in heating oil, propane, natural gas and electricity, announced today the acquisition of the assets of Southern New Jersey-based Modern Gas, which serves approximately 8,000 customers, with annual propane volume of approximately 5.7 million gallons.

Commenting on the acquisition, Star Gas Executive Vice President Joseph Cavanaugh, stated, "We are constantly searching for well-run propane and heating oil distributors that meet our strict requirements, and we believe Modern Gas is a wonderful fit given its geographical proximity to our other regional propane operations and the fine job President Lou Benjamin and his team have done operating their business."

Star Gas Partners, L.P., is a leading distributor of home heating oil, propane and deregulated natural gas and electricity. Star is the nation's largest retail distributor of home heating oil, serving approximately 500,000 customers through its Petro and Meenan Oil subsidiaries. Star is also the nation's eighth largest retail propane distributor, serving approximately 275,000 customers throughout the Midwest and Northeast. Star owns a controlling 80.0% interest in Total Gas and Electric, which sells natural gas and electricity in the Northeast and Mid Atlantic to 54,000 customers.
